You’ve read a bunch of blog posts about list building and have realized that there isn’t anything new under the sun. Every post goes like this:
- Sign up for mailing list software
- Spend an insane amount of time creating an eBook to give out to people in exchange for their email address
- Then you sit around and wait for thousands of people to join your list
Except that these days, people have caught on to the fact that you’re just giving away a freebie so they can get on your list. They know you’ll be selling them something in your next email, so while this approach works… it doesn’t work as well as it used to if you don’t have a spectacular lead magnet.
If you’re like me, you’ve created lead magnets, posted your landing page on social media, you’ve boosted Facebook posts, and didn’t get close to the number of email addresses on your list that you thought you would.
Should you go back to the drawing board and create a new lead magnet?
Should you target a different audience?
Should you just give up?
What if I told you that you could save loads of time creating a lead magnet AND get way more people to sign up for your mailing list by using quizzes.
You’ve seen them all over social media.
You’ve even taken them yourself.
I know I’ve stopped working just to figure out which Kardashian I am.
But did you know that you can also use these quizzes to build your mailing list for your business?
In this article, I’ll tell you about Interact – the quiz building platform I use and how you can use it to get super detailed information about your customers and build your list at the same time.
But before we get started I have to tell you that I am a partner with Interact and if you sign up for their service using my link, I will receive compensation. However, my opinions in this review are my own.
How quizzes help grow your email list
At this point, you’re probably wondering how a quiz would even be relevant to your business, and how they can help you build a mailing list. Here’s how:
- Quizzes are interactive and engaging, which keep your visitors’ attention
- 10% of people who take online quizzes share their results on social media making the quiz distribution way easier for you
- The majority of businesses are still using downloadable lead magnets in exchange for email addresses – a quiz is a breath of fresh air for your customers
- You get to know a lot more about your website visitors than you would by just getting their email addresses – even if they don’t finish the quiz, you still see the answers they completed
- It’s a great way to guide users to the parts and products on your website that are the most useful to them
- It’s also a great way to segment your mailing list, so you’re sending super targeted emails to people who want to buy what you’re selling, instead of general emails and hoping for the best
Using Interact to create quizzes
Getting started with Interact quizzes is easy. In fact, they have over 100 ready-made quizzes in all types of industries that you can use. Or you can create one from scratch.
To get started, sign up for your free trial of Interact by clicking here.
Once you’re on the dashboard, you can create a quiz, giveaway, or poll. For the purposes of this blog post, I’ll only focus on the quiz creation part.
Once you make your choice to create a quiz, you’ll be asked whether you’d like to start from scratch or use one of their templates. If you select one of their templates, you’ll still be able to edit it in your voice, and change the branding around if you wish.
I opted to use one of their existing quizzes as my first one so I could get the hang of the software, and because I can be a bit of a perfectionist and try to work on the perfect quiz and never launch it.
If you’re starting from scratch
I would recommend starting with the end first.
Meaning, start with 3 – 4 possible results. Think about what the results page will say for your users, as well as where each results page will lead people.
Are you taking them to a blog post?
Linking them to a resource using your affiliate link?
Taking them to a booking page?
The sky is the limit, and each result can (and should) end up pointing your user to a different call to action based on where your customer is on their journey.
Back to the quiz editing
When you’re editing your quiz, you’re able to change colors, fonts, images, and text. You can also set branching logic. You’re able to edit the results, add a Facebook pixel, or Google Analytics info, and connect it to your mailing list.
Two of the most important options you need to focus on to make a quiz work in generating leads for your business is the mailing list connection and the quiz results page.
I recommend getting each quiz result page together first, putting in good descriptions for your visitor’s results, and leading them to the best call to action for their results.
Once you do that, you can enable lead capture for your quiz.
Interact integrates with many different email providers, so there’s a chance you’ll find yours on the list.
You’ll need to set up your opt-in form – I recommend only collecting people’s email address, skip the names and extra stuff.
Also, be sure to allow people to skip entering their email to see the results because you’ll still be sending people to a very targeted call to action with each result so these people could turn into your clients anyway.
You can (and should) map your quiz results to different email series. This post from Interact with best practices has some sample scripts that you can use for your email series.
Once you do that, you’re ready to launch your quiz!
When you publish your quiz, you’ll be able to embed it on your website in a few different ways or share the link on social media.
Creating quizzes to build your mailing list is a fun, easy, and smart way to grow your business.
With a little bit of planning, you’ll be able to laser target and segment your audience – resulting in supercharging not only your mailing list but your sales!
Interact makes it super easy to grow your mailing list with quizzes, polls, and contests. Give them a try free for 14 days by clicking here.
Just for fun, you can take my final quiz that I’ve customized and embedded in this blog post:
